The Otomi Dollmakers of San Miguel
As you wander through the Centro of San Miguel de Allende, you are sure to see indigenous women in colorful, ruffled dresses selling these bright hand-made dolls with embroidered features and hand-stitched clothes. These women are Otomi, the people who have lived in this part of Guanajuato for hundreds of years. The Otomi were one of the very early complex cultures of Mesoamerica. The Pyramid of Cañada de la Virgen, just a few miles from San Miguel, was built by the Otomi people more than 900 years ago.Their dolls, beautifully crafted and sold for extremely reasonable prices, make a wonderful souvenir of your visit to San Miguel.
