Presiding above the port and city, the fortress citadel El Castro is now surrounded by formal gardens, terraces and shady paths instead of soldiers on parade. A walk through the well-used park reveals ruins of a 2nd-century B.C.E. Celtic settlement, a naval war memorial consisting of anchors and cannons from sunken galleons, as well as an amphitheater, fountains, running trails, playgrounds and cafés.
