Escaping the Caracas Chaos
One of my favorite things to do in Caracas is to climb El Avila. There are several different route access points that can be found on the cusp of the city. Make sure you hike during the day (it is safest when there are a lot of people around) and try not to carry any valuable belongings (just in case...you never know, you are in Caracas). Not to scare anyone but seriously, don't flash around your cameras/iPhones, just be discreet. Okay, with the disclaimers out of the way, El Avila is gorgeous, providing fantastic views of the surrounding city along with a great workout. Plenty of people use the well worn paths to work out, and others (as in this pic) may just go halfway up to have some peace and quiet. If you make it to the top you'll find churro carts and other snacks and can gaze down upon Galipan on the other side or take the Papelon down to the bottom.
