The Eight Hells are one of Beppu’s most famous sights. Too hot for bathing—temperatures can rise to 150 degrees Celsius (302 degrees Fahrenheit)—they are to be appreciated from a distance only. Each comes with its own wonderfully descriptive name, such as Shaven Monk’s Head Hell, Demon Mountain Hell and White Pond Hell, that's inspired by its appearance (the water varies in color from chalky to cobalt blue). In addition, Tatsumaki-Jigoku (Geyser Hell) spouts every 30 to 40 minutes for five minutes and is not to be missed. It can take a couple of hours to explore the area's springs, gardens and miniature zoos since some of the "hellish" springs are a few miles from each other.
