Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park
Designated a National Natural Landmark, this beautiful state park near Tallahassee is a great spot for a refreshing dip in the springs during the steamy summer months and a prime place to spot alligators, turtles, cormorants and all manner of wading birds year round. The nature trails are at their most appealing during the winter and fall months, when cooler temperatures keep bugs at bay. The park’s historic, 27-room onsite lodge, built in 1937 by the industrialist for whom the park is named, hosts retreats and weddings and can be booked on a nightly basis. And there’s a nice onsite restaurant here, too, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serving up southern specialties.
