Dusky Sound

Linked to Breaksea Sound by the Acheron Passage, Dusky Sound is one of the biggest fjords in Fiordland National Park—40 kilometers (25 miles) long and eight kilometers (five miles) wide. The large Resolution Island sits at the mouth of the fjord, and more islands lie along its length, including Anchor Island, Long Island and Cooper Island. Especially in the sound's far reaches, waterfalls are plentiful, thanks to steep cliffs along the shore and heavy seasonal rains. Whales, seals and dolphins are often seen swimming alongside ships as they glide through the sound's placid, pure water.
