Dive in and strike it rich! The most expensive pearl ever sold at auction was a 55-carat beauty that went for almost $12 million in 2011. You probably won’t find one that size, but unless you get on your gear and plunge into the gulf, you’ll never know.
Pearl diving lets you literally dive into the culture of Dubai. Before modern Dubai arose from the desert, the mainstay of the economy was pearls, retrieved from the floor of the gulf. Once the cultivation of pearls was mastered, diving largely vanished, but tour operators will take you on an introduction to this fascinating part of Dubai’s history and culture. Only about one in ten oysters has a pearl, but if you find one, it’s yours to keep!
