Pehlwani Matches Bring Abandoned Areas to Life
Friday afternoons in the Creek area are home to the centuries-old South Asian wrestling tradition called Pehlwani. An abandoned area of sand comes to life when South Asian workers, taxi drivers, and others descend upon the area, enriching it with music and the art of Pehlwani. As a spectator, you will sit on the floor or a comfortable rock —if ever there was one. Wrestlers engage in a tight embrace until a winner is declared. The winner runs around the circle of spectators in celebration, as some spectators give him money for his feat. Depending on how many wrestlers step up to fight, the matches usually end right before sundown. Cap off your experience by talking to the wrestlers, some of whom can speak English.
