In 2012, Virginia law allowed breweries to introduce on-site tasting rooms, and they’ve hopped to it. Norfolk now has more than a dozen local breweries where you can sip craft beers at the source. O’Connors, one of the largest, offers live music and free tours during tasting room hours, when it serves seasonal brews as well as signature ones like the Green Can American Ale and R&R Lager. Your tasting tour should also include Smartmouth Brewery, near the Elizabeth River in Hampton Roads. Its founder, former lawyer Porter Hardy, now makes five year-round beers, including Murphy's Law Amber, as well as seasonal selections. As for wine, seek out Mermaid Winery—Virginia first and only urban winery—in the charming Ghent neighborhood. Small batch wine is made onsite using Virginia and California-grown grapes.
