Of all the dogs to have starred in films, Benji is among the true legends. The 1974 film starring the affable and clever mutt was the first in a series of five movies. A true underdog, the movie eventually grossed $45 million after being produced with a budget of under $1 million and rejected by all the major Hollywood studios. The film was shot in Dallas, Denton, and McKinney and visitors to the area can now sleep in the 1870 house that was Benji’s home in the movie. While the home where Benji hid out was abandoned in the movie, today it has been restored and reopened as a bed and breakfast that is just a short walk from McKinney’s historic heart and lively town square.
