Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Amsterdam NDSM Wharf
Street Art Hotel Next Big Thing In AmsterdamCities all over the world are embracing street art as a true art form. And nowhere is there a more focused appreciation for this emerging art form than Amsterdam. Opening in the summer of 2018 at the NDSM docks, the new Street Art Museum will be the largest street art museum in the world. And you can stay right next door.
Located in a former welding hangar for shipbuilding curator Peter Ernst Coolen walked me through part of the museum’s collection of works from the finest street artists in the world. The collection, started in 2015 includes more than 100 works by leading artists. What is astounding is the size of the canvases specially created for the enormous space. Artists David Walker of the UK, Cranio from Brazil and Hoxxoh for the USA all hang here along with many others. The area is known as the NDSM Wharf and has a “monument” designation by the city of Amsterdam meaning it is preserved for future generations. The wharf area has undergone a renaissance of sorts with condo-type buildings and hotels being built and has a fabulous location just a scenic fifteen minute ferry ride (free) to the old Amsterdam city core. A new hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Amsterdam- NDSM Wharf fully embraces its location as working partners of the Street Art Museum even including a special set of five rooms that famous street artists’ have painted their art right on the walls of the rooms. The lobby is so welcoming that one night I had a glass of wine with a friend sitting in the comfy chairs enjoying the relaxed ambiance. The food in their full-service Restaurant Brooklyn is seasonally fresh and the breakfast buffet is wonderful too.
In case you are not familiar with DoubleTree, it has re-branded worldwide and is no longer your grandmother’s cookie-cutter hotel. It has unique city hotels properties, resorts in desirable locations and some larger business and leisure hotels like the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal right near the Centraal train station in the heart of Amsterdam. And yes you still get a warm welcome and delicious chocolate chip cookie when you check in.
