On the eastern side of Sam Houston National Forest (one of four national forests in Texas) sits the jewel-like Double Lake, which feels worlds away from civilization (though Houston's only about an hour’s drive.) Planned and built by the Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the lake recalls summer escapes of an idyllic, less complicated past—think canoe and paddleboat rentals (watercraft with small electric motors are allowed), plenty of spots for picnics, and cozy camping facilities. Whispering pines and hardwood forests imbue the lake with a special sense of tranquility.
