Donkey Sanctuary
Once upon a time, the main mode of transportation on Aruba was by donkey. Then after the cars came, the animals were abandoned—literally—and wandered all around the island without home or purpose. In 1997 this home for abandoned animals was formed. Free and family friendly, this not-oft visited site features more than 130 rescued donkeys. Visitors can cavort with the friendly animals. There’s a petting zoo and opportunities to groom and feed the animals. (Bags of donkey food are sold at an additional charge.) A visitors’ center offers human refreshments, donkey-themed keepsakes, and screenings of educational videos.
