Whale watching
Fourteen species of marine mammals shelter in Dominica's waters, known as the whale-watching capital of the Caribbean. Their star: sperm whales, gentle giants despite being the world's largest toothed animals that still exist. A unique protein in their blood stores extra oxygen, allowing them to hold their breath for up to 90 minutes and dive down to 3,000ft (914m). The Nature Island remains the planet's most reliable place to commune with Physeter macrocephalus, and operators encounter whales at least 80% of the time!
