Old Oakland: One Slice of the New Oakland
Old Oakland--the historic district west of Broadway and north of the port--is defined by its Victorian architecture and panoply of new hangouts, like the District Oakland wine and whiskey bar, pictured, cheek by jowl with longstanding institutions like Ratto's (G.B. Ratto & Co. International Grocers) and Swan's Market, reborn as the revived Housewives Market, which houses the Museum of Children’s Art, Taylor's Sausage (superb boudin!), Sincere Seafood, and an amazing taqueria, Cosecha, with food by Dominica Rice, a veteran of the storied Chez Panisse in Berkeley.
