The symbol of Portugese expansionMy boyfriend and I visited this beautiful little country rich in history, castles and impressive landscapes.
Timing was perfect, a longer Easter vacation, when the weather is very lovely.
We would never rush through a country, rather return many times, because travel only becomes an experience if it is about quality not quantity.
We spent 4 days in the capital town Lisbon, taking big walks, sitting in old coffee houses, contemplating...
To step back a little and not to disturb locals immersing in their celebrations of the holy days of Easter, we rented a car and drove down to the magical tiny medieval town of Obidos.
We spent another memorable 4 days there, taking small excursions in the surrounding area, and getting to the most Western point of continental Europe...
A 12th century castle...
The tower of the castle...all ours for 4 nights :)
This picture was taken of the breath-taking Belém Tower (1515-1521) built by the order of King Manuel the first.

The Discoveries Monument stands at the edge of the Tagus as a reminder and testament to Portugal's golden age of discoveries, when explorers such as Vasco de Gama searched for and brought treasures back from the New World. Other figures on the monument include Camões and Henry the Navigator. Go at sunset, when the monument catches the last of the sun's rays and turns golden in the light.
