Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon

The Musée des Beaux-Arts is located in the centre of the ancient town of Dijon, in what used to be the palace of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy. The architecture is stunning, with its high mansard roof and neo-classical trimmings, it was created slap bang in that last century when the ancien regime was floundering and the flames of revolutionary fervour were being fanned. I was amazed to find out that Burgundy, now a discreet province of France, at one time threatened to subsume all around it, its territory stretched as far as Belgium in the north and could have easily become the nation state that is now France, only we’d be calling it Burgundy… Anyhoo, The Musée des Beaux-Arts is fabulous, housing incredible pieces of ornate rococo furniture, many of which were probably bought at ridiculously low prices during the revolution when such things were considered the epitome of the greed and excess of the nobility. It’s a fantastic place to spend an afternoon surrounded by the opulent art of a former age.
