"People working and living in the slums in Mumbai do not consider themselves poor. Poor is living on the sidewalk."
A fascinating insight during a tour of the commercial and residential areas of the Dharavi Slum, where much of 'Slumdog Millionaire' was filmed. I expected this to be an insightful and intense experience, and it was. The tour was sensitively and well done. I had many insights to the creativity and ingenuity of humankind, and many sobering thoughts about the conditions people work in and the plastic we throw away.
I had concerns about being voyeuristic, but was assured that it was not. Reality Tours does annual detailed interviews with the people who live there and assured us they are proud to show their industry and way of life. No photographs allowed, but Reality Tours will email you a link to photos.
It was well worth the experience to see a part of Mumbai that such a large part of the population lives and works in. Wear closed-toe shoes and expect to walk through unknown substances.
