As I was leaving Berlin's famous Fassbender & Rausch chocolate shop -- eagerly toting a bag of decadent, carefully handpicked chocolates -- I came upon the sight of Deutscher Dom (also known as the Neue Kirche). It was a beacon of light against the dark clouds, the sky opening to let in its brilliance, and I was simply stunned.
A beautiful architectural gem, Deutscher Dom and its French counterpart, Französische Friedrichstadtkirche, both lie in a public square called Gendarmenmarkt. Centered between these two cathedrals is Konzerthaus, a concert house where the German orchestra plays.
Visit the Gendarmenmarkt at night and you'll be treated to a stunning panorama of some of Berlin's most beautiful buildings (and don't miss the Fassbender & Rausch chocolate shop next door!).
