DESTE FoundationArt megacollector Dakis Joannou’s DESTE Foundation has been around for 35 years—first hosting blockbuster exhibitions, often curated by his friend American art dealer Jeffrey Deitsch, in venues around Athens—then settling into its own location in 1998, before adding an even larger space in 2006. Shows are often spectacular remixes of Joannou’s own ever-expanding art collection (which ranges from funky 1960s design objects to outsize sculptures by artists like Jeff Koons and Maurizio Cattelan, and much more) and/or new works curated by international boldface art-world names like Massimiliano Gioni. The Foundation also hosts the DESTE Prize, which awards a young Greek artist with funds and accolades, and has a project space on the posh, perennially artsy island of Hydra.
