Derry City Walls

The intact city walls, built in the early 17th century to protect against English and Scottish invaders, are 1.5 kilometers (one mile) long and completely enclose the historic center, which retains its original street plan. There are seven gates into the city, and 24 original cannons still sit atop the walls, including one named Roaring Meg. (A 17th-century writer said about the cannon that "the noise of its discharge was more terrifying than the contents of the charge to the enemy.") The history of Derry is recounted by displays in the Tower Museum, which also has panoramic views across the town and the River Foyle.
