What for years was a rundown and, many said, ill-humored, not-so-good cantina has been tendered a complete cutesification and transformed into Delirio Pushkin, the latest addition to Chef Mónica Patiño’s line of beautiful gourmet shops and cafés. While certain of the former barroom’s culinary specialties have been carried over to the new menu, Patiño has broadened and deepened the offering, with lots more salads and small plates as well as an insistence on first-order ingredients and from-scratch cooking techniques. Dishes served take inspiration from Europe and the Middle East, part of a menu that will change seasonally; current faves include the beet salad with dill, a lamb moussaka and a falafel sandwich. The grilled cheese and carnitas sandwich, though neither Levantine nor Continental per se, attracts passionate followers.
