Tour isn't the right word to explain what I signed up for. De La Gente Coffee is a Co-op which sponsors Coffee Farmers around Antigua. What's special about De La Gente Coffee is the quality and care they put into their coffee and farmers. I was given a tour with one of their coffee farmers and a local translator. We hiked up to the coffee farmer's father's land (the father's land was MUCH closer to where we were), and learned to pick coffee beans. We also learned the history coffee, and strategies on how and when to harvest the beans. The most incredible moment was back at the farmer's house. I learned where this farmer lived, what his family was like (his family his HUGE), and how they created coffee from the coffee beans we picked. The process is long and tedious, but fascinating for someone like me. After we ate home cooked lunch and home cooked coffee (literally cooked over a stove), I said my goodbyes and left with a pound of beans. This wasn't only a tour, this was a true look into the life of a Guatemalan farmer and his family. Check out http://www.dlgcoffee.org/.
