The best of the Barossa
While staying at Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, our restaurant waiter introduced us to some incredible wine from David Franz. We had not heard of the winery before, and it is not available in the US. We loved the 2010 David Franz Georgie's Walk Cabernet Sauvignon, and had a bottle each night at dinner. We loved the unique labels that the bottles. Since we were headed to the Barossa Valley after our Kangaroo Island stay, we thought we'd see about going to the winery. Unfortunately, David Franz doesn't have a cellar door. Fortunately, David is always happy to welcome guests and invited us to come by the winery and meet him anyway. David's a young guy, but has been making wine for his family, Peter Lehmann Wines, in the valley for years. David produces amazing wines. We tasted about 13 of them - from his delicate, dry Reisling to his deep, rich Cabernet Sauvignon. David explained the names behind a few of his best wines, named after his three sons and his dog Humphrey. We spent a few hours with David, tasting his wine, learning about his vineyard, all the while his staff prepared the wine's special black paper labels printed in white. His bottles are not only beautiful to look at, but what's inside is tummy to drink. We ordered a few cases and David organized the shipment with Wine Flight, the local wine shipping company for the Barossa. Call David is you are around the valley, as he loves to show off his wines.
