A western extension of the Beagle Channel, Darwin Sound wasn’t named in recognition of Charles’s world-changing ideas. Rather, HMS Beagle captain Robert FitzRoy bestowed the honor upon the naturalist after he saved the ship’s small boats from getting swamped by a glacial ice crash. Yet another Anglo-Irish place name in Chile, the irregular-shaped Londonderry Island to the south of the Sound was home to the Kawésqar and Yaghan peoples for thousands of years.
