Aguirre Passage

While the Aguirre Passage was first navigated by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897–1899, in recent years this part of Antarctica is more associated with Chilean research missions. In the 1950s, the Chilean Antarctic Expeditions operated a science station on Waterboat Point. Earlier, a Chilean expedition from 1947 to 1948 established Base General Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme and Chilean President Gabriel González Videla personally inaugurated it, which made him the first head of state to set foot on Antarctica.
