Liz Biro’s Top Chef Farmers Market Tour and Cooking Class in Wilmington, NC lets guests experience the Southern cuisine revival. This Port City tour begins on Saturday morning at locally-owned Hot Pink Cake Stand and was led by the journalist and culinary arts extraordinaire Liz Biro. After sampling Fall-themed-from-scratch pumpkin cupcakes, Liz guided us through the waterfront farmer’s market where we sampled local produce such as blueberry and walnut goat cheese, pickled okra, heirloom tomatoes, herbs, and local seafood. After listening to local vendors, we gathered up our market favorites and embarked on a cooking class with Chef Tyson Amick at Aubriana’s. We were treated to a fun and instructional experience where we learned about produce and protein selection, balancing acidic and alkaline flavors in vinaigrette and cooking techniques such as “arroser” (i.e. basting) which culminated in a seasonal and “local” lunch feast.
Tours occur in small groups and year round regardless of the weather. Arrive early to secure $5 all-day parking in designated lots versus 2 hour street-side parking. Liz’s enthusiasm for the southern food movement is expressed through her cultural, historical and hands-on tours. Once booked, be sure to come hungry to sample foodie treats and absorb a wealth of local and culinary knowledge that Liz is passionate to share!
