Tuesday and Friday are typical market days in Alofi, when locals go to buy fresh produce and fish, as well as handicrafts. Handmade souvenirs can also be found in various shops and cultural centers around the island, especially on days when cruise ships visit. Typical items found on Niue include intricately woven baskets and hats made from pandanus leaves, colorful embroidered clothing and pillowcases and jewelry carved from coconut shells. Honey and natural soaps are also of high quality but might present a problem with customs officials. Ask at the tourist office for a calendar of village show days, when lively markets take place with dancing, cultural competitions, traditional costumes and plenty of food.
