Coromandel Peninsula

Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato 3591, New Zealand

On the western side of the Bay of Plenty, with Auckland lying farther west across the Hauraki Gulf, the Coromandel Peninsula is dominated by a rugged mountain range of the same name. There are also several subranges that run the spine of the 80-kilometer-long (50-mile-long) peninsula. At its tip, the 892-meter-high (2,927-foot-high) Mount Moehau is sacred to the Maori and home to a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, while coves dot the shoreline below.
