The hieroglyphic staircase at the ancient Maya site of Copan tells the story of the Copan dynasty in its entirety and is the longest inscribed Maya text ever discovered. I'm certain the sacrificial victims who were forced up these stairs to have their still beating hearts carved out of their chest did not manage to read the script on the way up, but they were probably aware they had fallen into powerful hands. Copan is the only major Maya ruin in the country of Honduras and the quality of the ancient art on display there may be the best of any Maya site anywhere.
