Just over the border in County Mayo, Cong has postcard-pretty looks that have been put to good use, most notably as one of the main locations for John Ford’s classic 1952 movie, The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. The picturesque remnants of a 13th-century Augustinian monastery and abbey sit on the banks of the crystalline Cong River at the edge of the village. Take a ramble along the tranquil riverbank to see the ancient Monks' Fishing House, and continue along the forest trail to see the splendor of Ashford Castle on the shores of Lough Corrib.
