Colonia Tovar

"The Germany of the Caribbean"
If you're passing through Caracas it's well worth a day trip up to Colonia Tovar for a dose of German culture tucked sweetly into the Venezuelan mountains. The small village is built in the spirit of a typical Bavarian settlement that you often find in random places around the world, you will find german-style stores, chapels, buildings and restaurants (and here a mix of German and Spanish spoken in the streets). It's a lovely little escape and an interesting glimpse at a culture who planted themselves in these mountains in 1843. Be sure to get an order of the fresh fresas con crema, they're simply divine!
