Fête de la Châtaigne
The last three Sundays of October reaps a festival in the Vars region as chestnut foresters harvest their fruit for the year. The festivals begin on Saturday with organized hikes and guided mushroom hunts in the Massif des Maures. Sunday morning the real show begins with a farmers market that includes chestnut cooking workshops, free tastings, live music, folk dancing, a mini farm and lots of games. Members of local guilds parade with pomp and circumstance, wearing their medieval costumes, bearing standards and stopping along the way with an officious speech to welcome new members. The sweet perfume of roasted chestnuts and crèpes with chestnut paste fills the autumn air, promising a joyous celebration.
