At dusk, hundreds of giant fruit bats fly softly into the sunset to forage on neighboring islands in the Coron archipelago. (By day they roost in trees by the resort’s abandoned tennis court.) We came to snorkel and had hopes of seeing the dugong (sea cow, a relative of the manatee). What made our stay memorable was the beauty of the unexpected -- the bats’ nightly sojourn.
