When a writing assignment sent me to Santa Cruz in search of "couple-friendly" activities, visions of relaxing on a massage table danced in my head. My mate, on the other hand, had always dreamed of learning to ride waves, so I stepped outside my comfort zone and called Ed Guzman of Club Ed International Surf School.
Our private lesson with the man himself began on dry land and included an overview of wave dynamics, paddling, surf etiquette, and stand up/riding techniques. I appreciated Ed's mix of positive reinforcement and honesty as he guided us through the basics and pinpointed ways we would (hopefully) improve as the day progressed. Once we hit the water, we listened closely for his count to three and call to stand up as opportunity approached in all its blue, frothy glory.
I would’ve stayed out all day (if only to take in more of this local treasure’s life lessons) but appreciated that Ed sensed my body putting on the breaks after more than an hour in the water. As I recovered in the sand, I was glad my boyfriend and I decided to forgo the spa. Without a doubt, this experience brought us closer than any couples massage ever could.
