Clingmans DomeClingmans Dome is the third-tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River and the highest point in Tennessee. On a clear day, visitors can see more than 100 miles in each direction from the large tower on the summit. To reach the viewing platform, you must hike up an admittedly steep half-mile trail from the parking area, but it’s doable and well worth the effort to see the unique coniferous rain forest at the top. The road to the Clingmans Dome parking lot also offers plenty of scenic overlooks of the ridges and valleys, but it closes during the winter and any inclement weather, so plan your visit accordingly.
