Imagine several hectares of red velvet, a few dozen oil paintings, plush sofas and chairs that evoke a sixteenth-century royal French court, and buckets of gold leaf. That gives some idea of the building blocks on which Russian nightclub Chocolate is built. And while this spacious club is known for a decor deemed over the top by many, it is better known for its live entertainment, which can range from Russian rock bands, to cabaret singers, to pole dancers, to modern dance routines. In many cases, there is a wink-wink element to the performances, but there is nonetheless some real talent behind them.
Your best bet is to go to Chocolate toward midnight with a group, grab a table, order drinks and food—surprisingly good for a night club—and enjoy the show, whether on stage or in the form of the surrounding crowd. If you plan to get a bottle, the best buy is Russian Standard. It's about the only thing that is standard in this place.
