Chinatown in Victoria
The oldest Chinatown in Canada and the second-oldest in North America (after San Francisco’s), Victoria's enclave is small but impressive. The community formed when Chinese gold miners arrived from California in the mid-1800s. Don’t miss Fan Tan Alley, a narrow passage that runs from Fisgard Avenue to Pandora Street between Government and Store Streets. It was previously a seedy area with gambling clubs and opium dens—a marked contrast to the boutiques, loft apartments and office buildings of present-day Chinatown.
