Chinatown in Honolulu has an enormous number of shops and restaurants, food stalls, and vendors within several blocks of downtown. There always seems to be something new to try or buy. First Friday is a great time to visit Chinatown for the art walk. Some restaurants offer specials, and local vendors proudly display their work. It’s a way to experience a part of Hawaii’s eclectic cultures.

The Culture of the Lei

A lei is basically any series of objects strung together with the intent to be worn. This explains why I received not only the more typical flower leis but also some non-flower leis on my last visit. However, the most popular concept of a lei in Hawaiian culture is a wreath of flowers draped around the neck presented upon arriving or leaving as a symbol of affection. Head to the Lei shop in Honolulu‘s Chinatown district and watch the experts at work at M. P. Lei Shop, 1145 Maunakea Street.
