Haggling for textiles at Guatemala's bustling Chichicastenango Market
Markets are a true test for any traveler. And Chichicastenango is the mother of all markets. Which is why I will give myself a pass for haggling for hours for a beautiful embroidered traditional Guatemalan top, only to bring it back to my hotel and find that it doesn't fit over my head. Needless to say, said "top" has been repurposed into a throw that now decorates my couch. I would file this into the hall of classic souvenir mistakes (where my ugly Peruvian voodoo doll reigns supreme) if I didn't still love the throw-top as much as I did the minute it was first thrust at me by a throng of Guatemalan women at that crazy wonderful bazaar.
