Loy Krathong is an annual festival that is celebrated throughout the country of Thailand. I happened to be in Chiang Mai, one of Thailand's northern cities, during this festival. The entire experience is magical. Thousands of paper lanterns are lit and released into the sky. An equal number of beautifully decorated, tiny boats with candles aboard, course down the river that flows through town. Throngs of people abound on all sides. Food and drink is being sold on the crowd edges. Exhibits parade down the streets. Fireworks explode overhead. It's an all-out celebration that lights up the entire night sky and is something truly unforgettable. Normally, this festival takes place in November on a full moon. Once in Chiang Mai, it isn't hard to find the action, as the lanterns dotting the sky will guide you to the river's edge.
I took this photo in the middle of the celebration as two Thai people were preparing to release their lantern. Others dot the sky, and the full moon was peaking behind clouds, making the image extra special.
