Chi Lin Nunnery

5 Chi Lin Dr, Diamond Hill, Hong Kong

A tranquil oasis in the middle of Hong Kong with exquisite gardens and temples, this was crafted just 14 years ago without the use of nails or any other intrusive metal fastening devices. It is also worth a visit to its vegan cafeteria—the food was simply delicious. The setting is a cafeteria that reminds this girl of her Catholic school upbringing. But the food at Chi Lin is far superior.

Tranquility In Chaotic Hong Kong

With all the hussel and bussel in Hong Kong it was wonderful to spend a few hours a the peaceful Chi Lin Nunnery. The lotus ponds and the beautiful Buddhas provided a serene setting. There is also a great shop on the site where we bought some terrific collapsable silk boxes. Highly recommended!

Buddhist Vegetarian Fare

Buddhism is highly respected in Hong Kong, making this one of the best cities to sample Buddhist vegetarian fare. Make a reservation for regular table seating or traditional floor seating at Pure Veggie House and order from their famous “18 Luohans” (“18 Arhats”) menu. This menu offers dishes based on the Buddhist concept of the same name, which means “one who is worthy” in Sanskrit. For an exceptional meal, go to Chi Lin Nunnery in Diamond Hill, North Kowloon. Located within calming gardens, its restaurant emphasizes well-made Chinese vegetarian dishes, unlike others that focus on mock meats made from soy. This is also the only place in Hong Kong to find buildings constructed by using an interlocking system dating back to the Tang Dynasty.
