Chez Panisse: A mecca for foodiesAny true foodie has heard of Alice Waters and her restaurant, Chez Panisse, located on Berkeley's too cool for school main drag, Shattuck Ave.
Chez Panisse is known for using (mostly...raising my eyebrow in judgement at the prosciutto from Iowa) local, fresh ingredients. Let's just say, if not for Alice Waters and Chez Panisse, there wouldn't be a Rene Redzepi and Noma.
But enough with the name dropping, let's get down to what we're here for, the food. The mushroom toast was outstanding, and the beets, oh the beets, they were divine. And I don't even like beets. Also, best sparkling water I've ever had. I would have ordered the "still water", but I had a momentary lapse and couldn't remember how to order "non-sparkling water" in English. I've only ever had to order it in Portuguese, and my brain got stuck on sim gas. But it turned out OK because Chez Panisse has some very fine sparkling water.
I'm not a wine drinker, so I can't vouch for their wine menu, but I was really quite pleased with the oyster stout from HenHouse Brewing that they had on tap. True creamy, deliciousness.
But the meal wasn't all beets, oyster stouts, and mushrooms. I was disappointed with the bread, which was only saved by the delicious butter I slathered all over it. Also, dessert could have included more chocolate, but that's true of everything, isn't it?
