Old Town

A walk through the mazelike cobblestoned streets of Chania’s Old Town offers up both a visual feast and a history lesson. With five distinct districts and buildings dating to the medieval period, influenced by both the Venetians (who conquered it in 1252 and later built the harbor) and the Ottoman Turks (who won possession of the city in the mid-17th century), Chania is a vibrant architectural mosaic. A guided tour will offer insight into the Christian churches, Jewish synagogues, domed mosques, elaborate palazzi, bubbling fountains, sober monuments and lively markets that make this one of Crete’s most visited sites.
