Visit Prison Island (Changu Island)
Prison Island, also known as Changu Island, is about a 30 minute boat ride from Stone Town. The water around the island is crystal clear and cerulean blue, which makes a snorkelling trip here hard to resist, but it’s also an interesting spot to visit to gain an understanding of Zanzibar’s history. This small island was used as a prison for disobedient slaves in the 1860s. By 1893 construction of an actual prison complex was completed here, but instead of housing prisoners it was used as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases. Nowadays, the island is home to a number of endangered Aldabra giant tortoises, gifted to the island by the British governor of the Seychelles in 1919. Some of the original tortoises are still alive today.
