The Haute RouteFew long-distance hikes offer the variety and grandeur of landscape as this route. Beginning in Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak, the Haute Route winds its way through the heart of the High Alps, culminating at the foot of the Matterhorn in Zermatt. This is a route of imposing peaks and magnificent glaciers, high alpine meadows, barren passes and lush green valleys, of cool mountain lakes, remote mountain huts, bustling Swiss villages, and tranquil, isolated old-world hamlets. Test Your Terrain Skills at Cosmiques Arete
Chamonix, France was the site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and is home to the beautiful Cosmiques Arete: a five-star ridge route in the Mont Blanc massif. Offering rock, ice, snow and mixed terrain, this trek appeals to those with some previous experience and technical ability. Starting from the Abri Simond Hut, climbers make a half-day journey to the famous Aiguille Du Midi summit at 12,605 feet. The finish involves climbing a ladder up and over the railing onto the observation deck – surprising the many tourists who take the cable car up from Chamonix.
