Flamingos: the pink landscape of YucatanIf you come to Yucatan and you don’t visit the “rias” where the flamingos inhabit, it is as if you go to Australia and you don’t see a kangaroo.
Flamingos can be seen in the wetlands all along the Yucatan Peninsula in almost any month of the year. Most of the visitors prefer to go to coastal towns like Celestun or Rio Lagartos, that are only 2 to 3 hours from Merida, Yucatan’s capital city.
When you reach Celestun or Rio Lagartos there are plenty options for the boat tours, in which you can see hundreds of pink flamingos. Some of the tours can also include sights of other birds species. You can also visit nice beaches or cenotes which are good for cooling off on a hot day. Trips are around 60 dollars for a family. You can also share the boat.
In addition, there are some other places that are 30 to 40 minutes from Merida such as Chuburna, San Crisanto, Progreso and Telchac where, on a lucky day you can see some of these beautiful pink birds from the highway.
