Above this 4th Street crafts store and paperie, beloved by everyone from Martha Stewart to local DIYers, is a studio classroom. With one-day and weekend workshops on topics such as pajaki chadeliers and Santos figures, this is the perfect intro to Berkeley's bohemia.
Classes are project-focused. You'll leave with your own work of art. If you're a newbie, not to fear. Instructors create a nurturing environment where students can take risks and grow their talent. In my drawing class with the groovy, ever-patient Alice Armstrong, a guru with a devoted student following, her only rule is you can't call your drawing names. No put-downs allowed.
The work, pictured here, is from Drawing & The Art of Seeing and illustrated by my classmate Sarah. It is a portrait of moi, hard at work capturing the essence of a red pepper.
