Art lovers visiting Ticino have a new destination in Ascona: the exquisitely restored Castello San Materno.
The exhibition space is a second location for the fine Museo d'Arte Moderna di Ascona. The permanent collection encompasses works from the Alten Cultural Foundation, primarily of renowned Northern European artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Impressionist, Post-Impressionists and Expressionists): Emil Nolde, August Macke, Lovis Corinth, to list just three.
I visited the Castello just one week after opening day, and found the gardens filled with trees in spring bloom, and the Museum itself light, airy and inviting. With just 40 or so works on display in rooms on three floors, each one can be seen to full advantage.
The Castello San Materno is just a short walk from the center of little Ascona, and makes a delightful afternoon excursion.
