Originally built in the 12th Century during the Norman Conquests, Castello Normanno-Svevo in Bari, Italy is one of those spots with layers and layers of history.

When I entered the courtyard, I felt my heart lift, as the palm trees against the architectural elements reminded me of an engraving by one of my favorite artists, David Smith-Harrison (see link below).

When you've had your fill of history, take the city bus down to Pane e Pomodoro beach for a swim and some refreshments.
